Half Marathon Training

Now that the 10-miler is complete and I have taken a week off, it's time to start training for my first half-marathon. I signed up before I completed the 10-miler only because I was able to score registration for $1. No kidding! How could I not? The hubby also signed up, but his registration was $10. Even so, $11 for 2 people to run a half-marathon is incredible. On February 2nd, 2013, we will be running our first half-marathon in the Best Damn Race. Seriously, that's the name of it. We will see if it lives up to its name.
Even though I just completed the 10 mile race, the hubby has not, so I'm going to start over with the training. Wonder if he will survive? He bailed on the 10 mile training, but now that he has committed to a race perhaps he will see it through. This time, I have stuck to the more traditional training plan. I used baby steps to work my way up with the 10-miler, but I had a lot more time to train.
After finishing this, I discovered that K2 was moving up to the next level in gymnastics and would be going two days a week. Too much planned for Tuesdays and Thursdays, so we will be doing Monday and Wednesday instead. I left the long runs for the weekend (not enough time during the week) and also kept it open for Saturday or Sunday. Some weekends the busier day is Saturday and sometimes it's Sunday. The best part of all this is the timing. The weather should start cooling down soon. No, not yet...we are in Florida, but soon and it's should be perfect for the long runs in January.

So far, we've completed our two weekday runs for week 1. Time to kick this training into gear!

Good luck with your training! It should start to feel a lot easier with the better weather.

Easy Baby Sweater and Hat

After searching and attempting to create the perfect - and quick/easy - baby sweater to give as a gift, I finally just combined a few to make the one I wanted. This particular one is more what I would envision for a girl (regardless of color) because of the lacy pattern created with the shells. My next step to find/create one for a boy. This one is simple enough to work up quickly. I only have a few hours of crochet time at night and I completed the set within 3 days. I imagine if you had half a day you could easily finish it in one setting, depending on your skill level. Sweater Materials: 3-4 ounces 3 ply baby yarn  Hook - size F for newborn  size G for 3 to 6 months size H (and 4 ply soft yarn) for 6 to 9 months 2-3 button for closure Pattern: (Shell = 2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) Starting at neckline, loosely ch 38. Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook & in each ch to end. (37 stitches) Row 2: ch 2, turn (counts as 1st dc throughout) 1 dc in ...

Crocheted Adventure Time Fiona Hat

Well, my cosplaying kid asked for another crocheted creation, but I don't watch Adventure Time.  I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into, but this was easy enough and I get to share a free pattern with you.  It straps around the chin with a crocheted button and I had the yarn stashed away.  I love projects that use up leftover yarn, don't you?  I started out with  Lilana Wofsey Dohnert's   Finn hat pattern on Ravelry. She's brilliant.  Then I made adjustments to make it Fiona and fit a bit more snugly.   Materials : Crochet Hook (Size US G-6 (4.0mm)) Yarn Worsted Weight Size 4 Medium ('Soft' recommended) Yarn Sewing Needle Fiberfil Batting Abbreviations : st: stitch ch: chain sl st: slip stitch sc: single crochet hdc: half-double crochet dc: double crochet tr: triple crochet inc: increase (crochet 2 st in single st; preceeded by type of st to use, i.e. 'sc inc') dec: decrease (make 2 st become 1; preceeded by type of st to use, i.e. 's...

Start Running!

Many of you have asked me how I got started with running.  Well, let me tell you!  This was no easy task.  My motto used to be "No one should run unless they are being chased."  Seriously.  Not only could I NOT run, I had always been told I would not ever be ABLE to run.  I have what's called physical activity induced asthma.  How is this different?  It means that any type of physical exertion can cause an asthma attack.  Lucky me!  I found this out when I was on the swim team as a child and pretty much sat everything out from there. Currently, I work with a young woman who has truly inspired me to run and she also has asthma (although not the same kind).  You can check out her blog here .  But it wasn't until October of 2010, when another co-worker started running and my thyroid was at an all time low, that I finally said, "get off your butt and go try it!"  And I did, along with my 14-year-old daughter.  And every ...
