Laundry Room Clean Up

I still cannot  believe  I am sharing with the world how  disastrous  my house has become. It is so  embarrassing . However, there is a happy ending to each one of the tales of woe that I share with you.  This is what has become of my laundry room. Back in January, my dryer finally gave out and the washer was on it's way behind it. I knew the day was coming that I would have to replace them, so this was not a huge surprise. I am totally in love with my new set - complete with fancy pedestals. What I'm not happy with is the larger size that doesn't quite fit in the laundry "closet".  We ended up taking the bi-fold doors off to accommodate them. Not a huge deal, but now I can't hide my mess behind the doors. Because we leave and enter through the garage, the laundry/pantry area is the first and last place we go to on a regular basis. This means stuff get dropped here all the time. Add that to an already cluttered shelving area and you get ...

2 Steps Forward

One of the first tasks I took on before deciding to re-organize the whole house was to tackle the linen closet. This has got to be the one area that takes the biggest beating, mostly because I think it is easy to close the door.   Out of sight, out of mind. That is, until I open that door. I actually had not been in there for awhile because my hubby had taken on the chore of doing the laundry and putting the sheets and towels away.   Yes, dear. I'm calling you out. Don't say I didn't warn you. K2 has been begging for more chores so that she can buy something and I was happy to give them to her. The towels had just finished drying and I was eager to hand them over. She did an excellent job. Then I went to put these towels away... and there was no room to put anything! At one point, it was very neat and tidy. With this small of a space there is no room for unruliness. But it was late last night and no time to start over. Baby steps, people! I did remove the mess tha...

Organizing Yarn

Just a portion of my out of control yarn mess. My yarn stash may be a little out of control.  Just a bit. Just a lot according to my hubby. Having two girls digging through it for their own crafty ideas makes it even worse. It's time to get it under control. Plus, I can't stand having my yarn knot up when I'm making something.   I wish that I had a ball winder, but remember, I'm cheap thrifty. I pinned this little gadget to my "Gifts I want" board, but it's not really practical right now.   I have a free way of getting the same result, but it does take a little longer. You just need a stick of some sort. I have used a large crochet hook like this one: Size Q Hook Of course, because of this mess I couldn't find it.  Instead, I used a broken drumstick. Seriously. See the duct tape? It still works for me. Take one end of the yarn and hold it against the stick with the tail pointed down. Start winding around the tail . Wind about 5-10 times, th...

Check your drawers

Do you ever have one of those projects that turn into something much bigger than it started out?  You know, like when you say I'm going to fold the towels, but you see a counter that needs to be cleaned off so you stop to do that and then that turns into emptying the trash, and so on and so forth. This reminds me of the children's book about giving a mouse a cookie? That was me this weekend.  I went to get something out of a drawer and couldn't find what I was looking for. So I started with this drawer. Not bad, but impossible to find stuff.  And why do I need all of those screwdrivers in the house?  Oh, and how did a Velcro curler get in there?  This just won't do.  Besides, I already have one junk drawer so I'll just clean that one, too. But I'll need to clean out the third drawer to keep stuff together.   See where I'm going with this?  This eventually grew into cleaning out 3 more drawers for a total 6!   Ok, the last one I had a...

Organize It - Shoe Rack Grips

Do we really need all these shoes?  You can only wear one pair at a time.  I guess it's a necessary evil.  Shoes aren't my thing.  I have more flip-flops and athletic shoes than anything else.  I'm happy with that.  My favorite shoes are actually my slippers.  I could wear them all day and would wear them out if I thought I could get away with it. My hubby, on the other hand, can't have enough shoes.  Our youngest K takes after him.  We have a fairly large rack for our shoes in the closet to accommodate all those shoes.  It's nothing fancy and fulfills my two requirements.  It's functional and doesn't take up a lot of space.  But there is one huge flaw.  Our shoes don't stay put! It ok for shoes that have heels on them because they hang on the back bar. Shoes like this: But if they are flat, like tennis shoes or flip flops (like most my shoes) then they slip right off and I trip over them trying ...
