This was our last show of the season for the Straz Center 2012-2013 Broadway series and it was a packed house. Who would have thought that a Sunday afternoon show would draw so much attention? It was so crowded that they sold out of sandwiches and we had to make do with a granola bar to get us through the show.
We saw the movie not too long ago and found it to be griping and emotional. I was curious how they were going to present the horses in the stage show. The previews showed puppets, but I was worried that it would be too cheesy and lose the power of the story. Boy, was I wrong. It was incredible and more believable than some of the other musicals we have seen. The puppeteers made those horse seem very realistic.
The theater was so engrossed by the show that it was completely silent, until a cannon went off. Then I found out the guy sitting next to me was sleeping. Really? Well, I do believe that we are usually two of the younger people that come to the theater. I am glad, however, that we saw the movie first. There's so much going on that it's hard to see everything that's moving on stage. We at least had an idea of what to expect. I can see why War Horse won five Tony Awards in 2011. It's really amazing and I highly recommend it.
And yes, K1 has a book in hand for the intermission. Like always. Shhh...don't tell anyone, but I did, too. At least we know where she gets it from.
